Nephrohelp's Guide to Nephrotic Syndrome: A book for caregivers looking after kids afflicted with the ailment
Kolkata/IBNS: Struck with a complex medical condition such as Nephrotic Syndrome (which affects the kidneys and can lead to various complications), most people are at a loss but not Amey Agarwal of Kolkata.
Agarwal was diagnosed with Nephrotic Syndrome at the age of two years.
Nephrotic Syndrome is a condition that causes the kidneys to leak large amounts of protein into the urine.
According to medical practitioners, this can lead to a range of problems, including swelling of body tissues and a greater chance of catching infections.
Under the treatment and mentorship of Dr. Rajiv Sinha (Paediatric Nephrologist, Institute of Child Health) and a support circle of family members and friends, Agarwal managed to combat the ailment.
But he soon realised that not all children are as lucky as him.
Therefore, he launched Nephrohelp, a charitable organisation, to help kids in similar distress.
According to the organisation, Nephrohelp, aided by donations from various people, has already helped two kids suffering from the disease with an amount of rupees eight lakhs.
On World Kidney Day, Nephrohelp, in association with Kolkata based Institute of Child Health (ICH), released a comprehensive guide - Nephrohelps Guide to Nephrotic Syndrome - for a better understanding of this complex medical condition.
Daniele Panfilo, Head - Finance, Consulate General of Italy in Kolkata along with Prof (Dr.) Apurba Ghosh, Executive Director, ICH, Prof (Dr.) Jaydeb Ray, Principal, ICH and Prof (Dr.) Rajiv Sinha were present at the event.
According to Dr. Apurba Ghosh, children with kidney diseases are often rather vulnerable because families with limited access to healthcare refuse to accept that kidney diseases can affect humans at such a tender age.
Said Dr Ghosh, "Nephrotic syndrome happens to be a common kidney disease in children and there are many misconceptions regarding the treatment of the same. This booklet on nephrotic syndrome is meant and dedicated for all parents caring for children with nephrotic syndrome and I am sure it will provide them with a comprehensive knowledge about how to care for these children.”
Said Dr Rajiv Sinha, “The biggest obstacle we face while treating children with nephrotic syndrome are the misconceptions in the minds of their parents and relatives. Although we try to counsel them, it often becomes impossible to address all their queries. Hence, we decided to write this book in an attempt to equip the parents better with all the do's and don'ts of caring for these children on a day to day basis."
