Indian Railways to use IoT technology to resolve issue of unclean toilets in trains: Report
New Delhi: Indian Railways has undertaken several major initiatives to modernise trains, stations, and related facilities. However, a persistent issue for train travellers remains the presence of unpleasant odours and unclean toilets.

According to an Economic Times report, Indian Railways intends to address this problem by leveraging technology. Passengers have frequently re complaints about this issue while traveling on trains.
The report said that the Railways Board is considering the adoption of IoT-based technology to tackle this challenge.
This technology would use sensors to detect foul odours in the train toilets.
According to the report, Viliso Technologies, a startup based in Mumbai, has been chosen for a trial project aimed at addressing this issue in specific train coaches.
How does the technology function?
The technology employs intelligent systems equipped with sensors designed to detect malodorous substances present in the air in the train toilets.
These sensors can identify volatile compounds and molecules. The data collected is then transmitted to a central hub for analysis.
The hub can then initiate automated responses, such as alerting sanitation staff when cleaning is required due to foul odours.
This real-time monitoring allows swift intervention and enhanced odour management.
According to information on Viliso Technologies' website, the startup offers several IoT-based products designed to improve sanitation.
One such product is Gandhvedh, an electronic device that uses IoT technology to monitor odour, Total Volatile Organic Compound (TVOC) levels, temperature, and humidity.
The device is installed in toilets where odour monitoring is necessary, the product description on the official website shows.
The company states that the device transmits odour data to a mobile app and web app, which are used by caretakers or monitoring people responsible for maintaining toilet sanitation.
