Eiffel Tower evacuated after bomb threat
Paris: The iconic Eiffel Tower in France’s capital Paris had to be evacuated on Saturday following a bomb threat, media reports said.
SETE, the body which runs the site, evacuated three floors of the Eiffel Tower in central Paris, according to news agency AFP.
At around 1:30 pm (1130 GMT), visitors were safely evacuated from all three floors of the Eiffel Tower as well as the square beneath the monument, it said.
A bomb disposal squad and police teams are scanning the area, including a restaurant located on one of the floors.
"It's a usual procedure in this kind of situation which however is rare," a spokeswoman said.
The construction of the Eiffel Tower started in January 1887 and was completed on March 31, 1889. The iconic landmark attracted a total of two million visitors during the World's Fair of 1889.
