Pakistan stands at 99 among 121 countries in Global Hunger Index
Islamabad: The Global Hunger Index (GHI-2022) has placed Pakistan in 99th position out of 121 countries in terms of hunger.
According to the GHI-2022 report released on Tuesday, the country's score has slipped from 38.1 in 2006 to 26.1 in 2022. A score of zero indicates that there is no hunger problem in a country.
The level of hunger in the country has increased due to armed conflict, climate change and the coronavirus pandemic. During these conditions, 828 million people were forced to starve. As things stand now, 46 countries will not be able to achieve even a low level of hunger by 2030. It is a distant thing to eliminate hunger completely ,according to the GHI.
In Africa, sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia are once again among the regions with the highest rates of hunger, the statement said.
South Asia is home to the world's highest levels of hunger, the highest rate of child stunting and the highest rate of child wasting of any region in the world.
The level of hunger in Pakistan is grave. The GHI is a peer-reviewed annual report and which is jointly published by Welthungerhilfe and Concern Worldwide and will raise awareness and understanding of the fight against hunger through this report.
