Attack in a CPI (M) meeting at Joynagar, 12 including top leaders injured
Amidst statewide road blockade agitation of Twipra Students’ Federation (TSF), causing tremendous miseries to common people, the border Joynagar area of Agartala become volatile after political clash erupted among supporters of CPI(M) and BJP, in which 10 to 12 CPI(M) leaders and supporters suffered injuries . After the incident, tension gripped the entire area and large numbers of security forces were deployed.
Sources said that as part of statewide agitation, opposition CPI (M) organized a street meeting at the bordering Joynagar area under West Agartala police station in presence of CPI(M) West Tripura district committee secretary, Ratan Das and senior party leader Subhasish Ganguli. During the meeting, all of sudden a group of 15 to 20 youths owing their allegiance with the ruling party started indiscriminate attacks on that meeting with Lathis and rods and seriously injured CPI(M) leaders.
As a result, CPI (M) leaders including Ratan Das and Subhasish Ganguli suffered critical injuries and among injured CPI (M) leaders and workers, five were referred to GB Hospital from IGM Hospital and four more supporters were released from the hospital after primary treatment.
After the incident, large number of CPI (M) workers through a rally gheraoed the West Agartala police station on Saturday evening led by party leaders Pabitra Kar, Sankar Prasad Datta and Amal Chakraborty demanding immediate arrest of all miscreants responsible for the attack in a peaceful meeting. They also met the OC of police station, Paritosh Das and submitted a memorandum demanding arrest of all miscreants.
Police sources said that after the clash, a large number of security forces were deployed at the incident spot and police had also shifted some CPI (M) workers to hospital.
Meanwhile, CPI (M) through a press statement strongly condemned the attack in a peaceful meeting and claimed that a group of miscreants led by BJP Mandal president of 7-Ramnagar assembly constituency, Amitabha Bhattcharjee attacked that meeting without any provocation.
CPI (M) said that during indiscriminate attack their leader including district secretary Ratan Das, state committee member Subhasish Ganguli, Subash Dasa, local leader Joynal Uddion, Priyalal Das, Manik Dhar, Bhabotosh Roy Chowdhury and Ratan Rabi Das suffered critical injuries.
CPI (M) alleged that after the formation of BJP government, many attacks by miscreants of ruling party were committed in Joypur area and despite repeated appeals, police remained silent spectators.
CPI (M) also lodged an FIR at West Agartala police station against miscreants, but so far none of the miscreants responsible for that attack are yet to be arrested. CPI (M) demanded immediate police action against miscreants and also threatened that they will organize statewide agitation if police remain as silent spectators.
