CPI (M) remembers Kokborok language movement martyr Dhananjoy Tripura
Opposition CPI (M) on Monday (March 3rd) observed the death anniversary of Dhananjoy Tripura, martyr of Kokborok language through different memorial programmes in different parts of the state.
Dhananjoy Tripura who was shot dead during the Kokborok language movement under the rule of the Congress government in 1975 on March 3rd.
On Monday morning, CPI (M) state secretary and leader of opposition (LoP) Jitendra Chaudhury accompanied by other party leaders and workers paid homage to the portrait of Dhananjoy Tripura at Dhananjoy Memorial part at South Tripura district
On March 3,1975, people of the tribal areas were going to submit a deputation at Tehsil Kachari in Jolaibari under South Tripura demanding recognition of Kokborok as the state language, return of illegally transferred lands, restructuring of tribal reserves and formation of ADC etc.
Police fired on the people and leader of Ganamukti Parishad (GMP), Dhananjoy Tripura was killed. He became the 1st Martyr of the language movement in the state, said Jitendra Chaudhury.
He said remembering Dhananjoy Tripura is more significant because after the formation of the BJP government in Tripura, the tribal people across the state are being deprived of their basic rights.
Later, in the afternoon, a memorial meeting was organized at Student’s Health Home in Agartala, where senior party leaders including former Chief Minister Manik Sarkar also addressed the gathering remembering the first language martyr of Tripura claimed that Kokborok language is now state language; it is because of the communist movement.
