Law and order improved in past 5 yrs, cases of assault, rape declined: CM
The Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha taking charge of Tripura, first time on Wednesday chaired a high level and law and order review meeting with DGP and other senior police officials of districts and subdivisions at police headquarters.
After the close door review meeting, the Chief Minister speaking with media persons ruled out the allegation made by the opposition parties and said that after formation of government in 2018, the overall law and overall situation of the state drastically improved.
Giving details of the review meeting, Dr Saha said that as per the statistics of crime data, different kinds of crime rate has been decreased in the state and Tripura now 5th least crime rate state of the country as the data released by the National Crime Records Bureau in 2021.
He said that the political activities by different political parties has increased in the state before the ensuing assembly elections and data provided in the review meeting over crime rate is most satisfactory.
Ruled out the lawlessness situation of the state claimed by the opposition parties, Dr Saha said that the cases of assault, rape and murder have decreased in Tripura since 2018, after the BJP formed government in the state.
"Today, I held a high-level meeting with the director general of police and district superintendents of police (SPs) to review the prevailing law and order situation. The reports submitted to me showed a steep decline in all crimes, be it hurt, assault, rape or murder," said Dr Saha.
In case of hurt or assault, an overall 40 % decline was registered since 2018. Cases of murder and rapes are also declining in the state, said Dr Saha.
Appreciating the rule of police administration, the Chief Minister asked the police officers to continue their efforts to maintain the good law and order situation.
Highlighting the steps taken by the state government to control crime rate, Dr Saha said that highway patrolling system has been introduced and Special Investigation Teams (SITs) are being formed for investigation narcotic related cases and to control the crime against women, 24-hours women help desk has been started in every police stations. He said that apart from seven all women police stations, a new women police station will come at Khowai, which will start functioning soon.
Dues to concrete measures taken by the state government, the crime against women has been decreased to 32 %, said Dr Saha and expressing his happiness over Tripura police’s combat against drug menaces, the Chief Minister said that from 2018 to 2022, police has registered 1900 NDPS Act cases and arrested 2700 accused persons in the same period. He said that Tripura is the second state of the region, which seized large quantities of contraband items.
He added that the government has taken many measures for modernization of state police and introduced Emergency Response Service Systems (ERSS) from 2019 and appointment process to recruit 1100 police constables is going on and 1200 more special police executives will be appointed.
He said that the police officers apprised him of problems faced by them, such as manpower shortage and lack of infrastructure in some places and the government will surely look into these problems at the earliest.
Later, in the meeting the Chief Minister has also issued some instructions for better policing and to maintain the peaceful law and order situation and their efforts to conduct the ensuing assembly elections in a peaceful manner.
