Three-tier Panchayat elections, BJP wins 70% Panchayat seats in Tripura uncontested
After withdrawal of candidatures for three-tier Gram Panchayat elections, the ruling BJP has secure a total of 70% seats of three-tier Gram Panchayat uncontested and from 6370 seats in Gram Panchayats, the party has also won 71% uncontested .
Official sources said that the Tripura State Election Commission (SEC) for August 8th three-tier Panchayat elections has received 10,165 nomination papers from different parties including from BJP, CPI(M), Congress and Tipra-Motha and after withdrawal of candidatures, election to be held for 18 19 seats of Gram Panchayats out of 6370 seats in 606 Panchayats.
In the Gram Panchayats, BJP won 4,550 of the total 6,370 seats uncontested, meaning no polling will be held in 71 per cent seats.
The ruling BJP in Tripura won around 70 percent of the seats in the state's three-tier Panchayat system uncontested including in Gram Panchayats, Panchayat Samities and Zilla Parishads.
There are a total of 6,889 seats in the Panchayat system, which comprises Gram Panchayats, Panchayat Samitis and Zilla Parishads, and the BJP won 4,805 seats uncontested, said Asit Kumar Das, Secretary of State Election Commission (SEC).
In the 1,819 Gram Panchayat seats where polling will be held, the BJP has candidates in 1,818 seats, the CPI(M) has fielded nominees in 1,222 and the Congress in 731 seats, Das said. BJP ally Tipra Motha has fielded candidates in 138 seats, he said.
Election will not be held immediately in one seat in Maheskhala Panchayat in West Tripura district where the BJP candidate died, he added.
"In the Panchayat Samitis, BJP won 235 or 55 percent of the total 423 seats uncontested. Polling will now be held for 188 seats," Das said.
The BJP has fielded candidates in all the 188 seats, while the CPI(M) and Congress have nominated candidates in 148 and 98 seats, respectively. The Tipra Motha has fielded candidates in 11 seats, he said.
Das said the BJP won 20 out of 116 Zilla Parishad seats uncontested, which is around 17 percent and the BJP has fielded candidates in all the 96 Zilla Parishad seats where polling will be held, while CPI(M) and Congress nominees are in the fray in 81 and 76 seats, respectively. In the Zilla Parishad, BJP ally Tipra-Motha will contest in two seats, while independent candidates to contest in 7 seats.
The last date for withdrawal of candidature was July 22 and polling is scheduled to be held on August 8 and counting of polled votes to be held on August 12 next.
It may be recalled here that in the 2019 Gram Panchayat elections, the ruling BJP won 96 percent of seats unopposed.
There are 33 percent reservations of seats for women; there are 6370 seats in 606 Gram Panchayats, 423 seats in 35 Panchayat Samitis and 116 seats in 8 Zilla Parishads.
The SEC sources said that a total of 12,94,153 voters including over 6.35 lakh women electorates are eligible to cast their votes in the local body elections.
The ballot papers in white colour from Gram Panchayat seats, pink for Panchayat Samitis seat and green colour for Zilla Parishad seats will be used for polling.
The counting halls will be set up at block headquarters with approval of SEC and counting of polled votes will start from morning 8 AM on August 12 and will continue till completion, said the SEC.
