Meet Amar Subramanya: the Indian-origin genius who is now Apple’s AI vice-president — here’s why it matters!
Indian-origin AI researcher and engineer Amar Subramanya has been appointed Apple’s new Vice-President of Artificial Intelligence, replacing longtime executive John Giannandrea, who will remain as an adviser until his retirement next year.
At Apple, Subramanya reports to top software executive Craig Federighi and will oversee foundation models, machine-learning research, AI safety, and evaluation—essentially steering Apple’s next-generation AI strategy.
The move signals that Apple is doubling down on AI, especially after criticism that the company had lagged rivals in rolling out advanced AI features.
“AI has long been central to Apple’s strategy, and we are pleased to welcome Amar to Craig’s leadership team and to bring his extraordinary AI expertise to Apple,” said CEO Tim Cook.
“In addition to growing his leadership team and AI responsibilities with Amar joining, Craig has been instrumental in driving our AI efforts, including overseeing our work to bring a more personalized Siri to users next year.”
Who is Amar Subramanya?
- Studied Electrical, Electronics & Communications Engineering at Bangalore University and completed a PhD in Computer Science at the University of Washington.
- Spent 16 years at Google, rising to head of engineering for Google’s AI-assistant project Gemini.
- Briefly joined Microsoft in mid-2025 as Corporate Vice President of AI, contributing to enterprise AI and foundation-model initiatives.
Why His Appointment Matters
- Subramanya’s experience in high-scale AI development at Google and Microsoft positions him to accelerate Apple’s AI ambitions.
- His dual expertise in theoretical research and product-scale deployment helps Apple balance cutting-edge innovation with user-facing applications.
- For India and Indian-origin technologists, his rise is a milestone of representation, demonstrating growing diversity in global AI leadership.
