BRS protest: Autos to Assembly, demanding aid for Telangana drivers
Hyderabad/UNI: BRS MLAs and MLCs on Friday arrived at the assembly in auto rickshaws, expressing their protest against the government's position on issues concerning auto drivers.
Notable figures among the protesting members, including MLAs Harish Rao, Talasani Srinivas Yadav, Sudhir Reddy, Sabita Indra Reddy, Mallar Reddy, Vivekananda, Madhavaram Krishna Rao, Padi Kaushik Reddy, and MLC Satyavathi Rathod, travelled to the Assembly in autos from the MLA quarters in Hyderguda, Hyderabad.
During the demonstration, Harish Rao addressed the gathering, highlighting the challenging conditions faced by auto drivers since the Congress party assumed power in the state. He expressed concern over the reported suicides of 21 auto workers in the last two months.
While acknowledging the government's initiative to provide free bus travel for women, Harish Rao emphasised the need for the government to also safeguard the interests of auto workers. He revealed that 6.5 lakh auto workers are struggling to meet their EMIs due to a lack of demand, with many resorting to fasting.
The protesting members are demanding compensation of Rs 10 lakh each for the families of deceased drivers.
Additionally, they are urging the government to incorporate provisions in the upcoming budget to ensure a living wage of Rs 10,000 per month for auto workers.
