New Delhi/IBNS: The Delhi government is set to make a law to regulate coaching centres in Delhi as a response to the death of three aspirants at an IAS coaching centre, which was running illegally at a basement in the national capital.

Addressing a press conference, Delhi Education Minister Atishi Marlena said, "We had hoped the central government would bring some regulation nationwide for coaching centres where illegal activities happen. But they did not.

"So we won't wait for the central government and introduce our own Act to regulate the coaching centres."

The minister said the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), which is run by Atishi's Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), has cracked down on the coaching centres that have been illegally using basements.

Atishi said 30 such coaching centres have been sealed while notices have been issued to 200 others.

Seven people have been arrested after three students died in a flood at a coaching centre which was illegally operating at a basement in Delhi's Rajinder Nagar area.

Abhishek Gupta and Deshpal Singh, the owner and the coordinator of the IAS coaching centre respectively, are among the ones who have been arrested.

The Rau's IAS Study Circle centre had been using the basement as a library despite civic authorities stating clearly that it should be used for storage or parking.

The incident, which resulted in the deaths of three civil service aspirants—Tania Soni and Shreya Yadav, both 25, and Navin Delvin, 28—occurred after heavy rainfall in Delhi flooded the basement.

Several students were in the library at the time.
