New Delhi: India is poised to achieve a significant milestone in its railway sector with the introduction of its first hydrogen-powered train, which is expected to commence operations by March 31, 2025, on the Jind-Sonipat route in Haryana, media reports said.

The move aligns with the country's broader push for sustainable transportation, aimed at reducing carbon emissions and promoting cleaner energy solutions.

Hydrogen-powered trains are widely seen as the future of eco-friendly rail transport, as they operate on hydrogen fuel cells that emit only water and heat as by-products.

This makes them a cleaner alternative to conventional diesel locomotives, significantly cutting down carbon emissions and noise pollution.

The upcoming hydrogen train in India is designed with advanced features, positioning it among the most sophisticated trains in the country.

The train can reach a top speed of 110 km/h, ensuring swift and efficient transportation. With passenger capacity of 2,638 passengers, it can serve a large number of commuters.

The train will be powered by a 1,200 HP engine, making it the highest-capacity hydrogen-powered train in the world.

Operational details

The train will operate along the Jind-Sonipat route in Haryana, covering a substantial distance with several halts to cater to daily commuters.

Haryana was selected as the launch state owing to its well-connected railway network and growing demand for sustainable transport solutions.

Key benefits of hydrogen-powered trains

The introduction of hydrogen-fuelled trains is expected to bring multiple advantages to India's railway infrastructure.

It will play a crucial role in furthering India’s zero emission targets. Unlike diesel locomotives, these trains release only water vapour, significantly reducing environmental pollution.

It boasts higher energy efficiency. Hydrogen fuel cells provide a more energy-efficient alternative to conventional fuel sources.

Despite the high initial investment, fuel savings and environmental benefits make it a cost-effective option over time.

Hydrogen trains operate more quietly, ensuring a smoother and more comfortable travel experience for passengers.

Part of India's green railway vision

The initiative falls under the Indian government's 'Hydrogen for Railways' project, which is part of a larger goal to make Indian Railways a net-zero carbon emitter by 2030. The government has been actively pushing for cleaner and energy-efficient transportation solutions, with hydrogen trains expected to play a key role in this transition.

By introducing hydrogen-powered rail transport, India will join the ranks of countries such as Germany, China, and the UK, which have already embraced hydrogen rail technology.

The launch marks a major step toward reducing the country's carbon footprint while enhancing energy efficiency in public transport.

The introduction of India's first hydrogen-powered train is expected to redefine the future of railway travel while contributing to global efforts to combat climate change.

This development underscores India's commitment to sustainable transportation and cleaner energy solutions, setting a new benchmark for green rail infrastructure in the country.
