Jadavpur University student found in unconscious state on campus, declared dead in hospital; probe underway
Kolkata/IBNS: A female student of Kolkata's prestigious Jadavpur University was declared dead after she was rushed to hospital in an unconscious state on Thursday night, media reports said.
The third-year student of the English department was rushed to a nearby private hospital after she was found in an unconscious state in a pond inside the campus.
The incident occurred during a cultural programme on the campus.
The student is suspected to have died of drowning.
The body has been sent for post-mortem. Police have initiated the probe into her death.
The incident occurred two years after a first-year student, named Swapnadeep Kundu, died of falling from a balcony after he was subjected to ragging by his seniors.
Several students were arrested in connection with the incident that had triggered widespread protests and demands to install CCTV cameras on the campus.
After the third-year student died on Thursday night, the ruling Trinamool Congress' student wing Trinamool Chhatra Parishad (TMCP), which is not in power in Left-dominated JU, has demanded the installation of CCTV on the campus.
"Our repeated demand has been for CCTV installation on campus and a permanent police post. These are not natural deaths. Those who opposed installing CCTV and setting up a police post cannot avoid their responsibility for this," TMCP state president Trinankur Bhattacharjee said.
I deeply regret the tragic death of a third year student of the English Department of Jadavpur University.
