Mamata Banerjee reiterates opposition to CAA, NRC and UCC on Eid

Kolkata/IBNS: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday reiterated her opposition to the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), National Register of Citizens (NRC) and Uniform Civil Code (UCC) addressing the Muslim community on Eid.

In her address during Eid prayers at the Red Road in downtown Kolkata, Mamata said, "My raza (wish) is unity among diverse religions, your security, your lives. No NRC, no CAA, no Uniform Civil Code. The individual rights of people will have to be intact."

Mamata has also said the CAA and NRC are the head and tail of a fish and UCC forms the remaining portion.

Mamata has been countering the BJP on CAA, which aims to give citizenship to people from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan who came to India due to religious persecution before 2015.

Countering BJP's claim, Mamata Banerjee has been saying registering for CAA, which was implemented last month, will lead to losing of citizenship.

"Do not register for CAA. If you do, you will be a foreigner and later you will be kept in detention camps. We all are citizens," she said.

Countering Mamata's claims, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who was in the state on Wednesday, said, "Mamata Didi is misleading people of Bengal. The migrants have no citizenship. She doesn't know it. I assure all migrants to apply for CAA without any fear."

In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the TMC suffered a setback by getting its tally down from 34 to 22 while the BJP got a meteoric rise from 2 to 18 seats.

However, BJP's hope to form government was dashed two years later when Mamata stormed back to power with over 200 assembly seats.
