MEA spokesperson Arindam Bagchi appointed as India's permanent representative to UN
New Delhi: External affairs ministry spokesperson Arindam Bagchi will take over as India’s new permanent representative to the United Nations (UN) and other international organisations in Geneva, a Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) statement said on Monday.
Nagaraj Naidu Kakanur, joint secretary (G20), and K Nandini Singla, High Commissioner to Mauritius could be the possible replacement for Bagchi, HT reported, citing anonymous sources.
Bagchi, a member of the 1995 batch of the Indian Foreign Service (IFS), took on the role of spokesperson in March 2021, overseeing India’s responses to the Covid-19 pandemic and the standoff with China along the Line of Actual Control (LAC).
Although due for an ambassadorial role after being promoted to additional secretary, he extended his term until after the G20 Summit.
Kakanur, a 1998 batch IFS officer, is known for his proficiency in Mandarin and extensive experience in China.
He played a significant role in negotiations for the G20 Summit's consensus leaders’ declaration.
K Nandini Singla, a member of the 1997 batch of the IFS, has previously served as ambassador to Portugal and as joint secretary (Europe West).
If appointed, she would be the first female diplomat in the role since Nirupama Rao in 2001-02.
Bagchi, relocating to Geneva, will succeed Indra Mani Pandey, who is expected to return to New Delhi headquarters.
Bagchi previously served at India’s permanent mission to the UN in New York and as director in the Prime Minister’s Office.
