Netizens launch #RevokeMetroFareHike after Bengaluru Metro becomes costliest in India

By IBNS
Feb 10, 2025..

Bengaluru/IBNS: The Bengaluru Metro is facing a massive backlash from the netizens after its revised fare turned it into the costliest among all metros in the country.

With the new metro fare coming into effect on Sunday, Bengaluru Metro even surpassed the metro fares in the national capital Delhi.

A single metro ride in Bengaluru for 12 km now costs Rs. 60, which is double the amount a Delhite has to pay.

The maximum fare for a metro ride in Bengaluru has surged from Rs. 60 to Rs. 90.

Kolkata Metro still offers the cheapest rides in the country with fares ranging from Rs. 5 to Rs. 50. The maximum metro fare for a travel for 25 km-30 km is Rs. 25 in Kolkata.

Chennai Metro charges Rs. 50 for a 25-km ride.

Slamming the Congress government in Karnataka over the fare hike, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Tejasvi Surya posted on X, "Karnataka Govt, instead of incentivising public transport and discouraging private vehicles, is doing the exact opposite with the Metro Fare Hike. Bengaluru metro fares should be at par with other metros in the country."

"Hike in bus fares coupled with big metro fare hike puts burden on the wallet of people and discourages use of public transport. No other metro in the country charges this high, nothing beyond ₹60 and the hike is extremely steep."

Netizens react

I travel every week thrice from KR Pura to Majestic/KSRR through #metro, and now the fare is up by 100%.This is purely the result of poor governance and the catalyst effect of unnecessary promises/freebies made by state govt. Common man will not tolerate this.#RevokeMetroFareHike pic.twitter.com/qRu5kyIz2w

#RevokeMetroFareHike#BengaluruMetro

For KR Puram to MG Road the fare I travelled back was 23.75 per ticket
Now its 50 per ticket

Why this much increase?
This is really unfair pic.twitter.com/hIBmDe0Uev

As a mode of protest, I took my car out today. We will fight till BMRCL corrects the stage wise fares to actual distance based logical fares.#RevokeMetroFareHike https://t.co/TYywO9ClT2 pic.twitter.com/GZvM3BkypN
