Night is Ours: Women to stage protest against Kolkata doctor's rape and murder across West Bengal tonight
Women in Kolkata and several other Indian cities will walk on the streets at late night (11:55 pm) on Wednesday to protest against the rape and murder of a PG trainee doctor in state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital that has sparked nationwide outrage.
The protest titled 'Night is Ours' was initially scheduled to be held in the Academy of Fine Arts, Jadavpur 8B and College Street areas of Kolkata.
However, similar vigils are now planned to be held in several places in the city and across West Bengal.
'The Night is Ours' or 'Women, reclaim the night' vigils are also expected to be held in Bangalore and Mumbai.
Speaking to IBNS, one of the organisers of the rally to be held in Behala Sakherbazar, said: "We are expecting 200 to 300 people are going to join the vigil tonight."
"We all are suffering today by seeing what happened to our sister in RG Kar. This is a brutal incident. No change can be brought in a day but we can at least protest and make sure the world changes to a better place for women as well as men in future," she said.
The campaign for the protest rallies initially began through some social media posts but now they have gained support from a large section of netizens who have expressed their desire to join the vigil on Wednesday night, a day before India celebrates Independence Day.
Bengali actress Swastika Mukherjee wrote on Instagram: "Mumbai. Join the cause. Join the march. Revolt. Do it for your own right to safety. Do it for your sister, your daughter, do it for yourself."
The rape and murder of a young doctor in Kolkata's state-run hospital has left the world's most populous country shocked and triggered a massive nationwide protest by doctors.
The Calcutta High Court on Tuesday ordered a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the rape and murder of the PG trainee doctor in RG Kar Medical College Hospital, an incident which has sparked nationwide protests and outrage.
The trainee doctor was allegedly raped and murdered at the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, which is located in North Kolkata's Belgachia area.
One person, a civic volunteer, has been arrested in connection with the case but protesting students suspect more people are involved in the case.
