On Rahul Gandhi's birthday in 2025, Stalin had addressed him as "my brother in ideals, bound not by blood, but by thought, vision, and purpose," describing him as a partner in the fight for a "brighter India".

This year, however, Stalin's message was notably brief and formal.

"Birthday greetings to Hon'ble Leader of Opposition Thiru. Rahul Gandhi. Wishing you good health and happiness," Stalin posted on X on Friday.

The contrast between the two messages has drawn attention amid the growing distance between the DMK and the Congress following their political split in Tamil Nadu.

From personal to professional

Stalin's 2025 birthday greeting was marked by warmth and political camaraderie.

"May you continue to stand firm and lead with courage. In our march towards a brighter India, victory shall be ours," he had written last year.

The absence of such personal references this year has been interpreted by political observers as a reflection of the changed relationship between the two parties.

The DMK and Congress, once key allies, parted ways after the Congress decided to join hands with the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) led by actor-turned-politician Joseph Vijay for the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections.

Rahul Gandhi extends an olive branch

Despite the cooling of ties, Rahul Gandhi struck a conciliatory tone in his response to Stalin's birthday wishes.

Thanking the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, Rahul wrote: "Our shared resolve to defend the idea of India, our Constitution, and federalism will continue to guide us — this is the fight for the very soul of our democracy, and we will wage it together, until we win."

The message is being viewed as an attempt by the Congress leader to keep channels of communication open with the DMK despite the electoral rupture in Tamil Nadu.

Vijay's birthday wish highlights new alliance

In contrast to Stalin's formal message, TVK chief and Congress's new ally Joseph Vijay wished Rahul Gandhi on his birthday in far warmer terms, referring to him as his "brother".

"You, who continue to raise your voice for the progress of our great nation India, for safeguarding democratic values, and for the welfare of people from all sections of society, I wish you good health, a long life, success in all your endeavors, and the ability to serve with distinction in public life," Vijay wrote.

Responding to Vijay, Rahul Gandhi thanked him and emphasised their shared commitment to Tamil Nadu.

"We remain united in our commitment to the Constitution and to strengthening our democracy — and together, we will keep working for the welfare, dignity, and aspirations of the people of Tamil Nadu," Rahul posted.

DMK distances itself from Congress

The changing tone in the birthday exchanges comes amid widening differences between the DMK and the Congress.

The DMK skipped the recent INDIA bloc meeting and has also sought a separate seating arrangement in the Lok Sabha, signalling its desire to maintain political distance from the Congress.

The party has written to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla requesting that its MPs be seated separately rather than alongside Congress members.

National politics keeps door open

While the DMK has distanced itself from the Congress in Tamil Nadu, Rahul Gandhi's response to Stalin focused on broader national issues such as federalism, constitutional values and democracy.

His message contrasted with the state-specific emphasis in his reply to Vijay, where he spoke about working together for the welfare and aspirations of the people of Tamil Nadu.

The differing messages underscore the Congress's balancing act as it seeks to nurture its new alliance with TVK while also keeping the door open for cooperation with the DMK at the national level.

With the DMK's 22 Lok Sabha MPs remaining an important component of the Opposition's strength in Parliament, the future course of relations between the two parties could have significant implications for the INDIA bloc's ability to challenge the BJP on key legislation in the months ahead.
