Operation Meghdoot: Indian Army releases video to mark 40 years of presence in Siachen Glacier

Indian Army’s enduring control over the glacier is a testament to the remarkable journey of technological advancements and logistical developments.

Over the past four decades, numerous endeavours have been undertaken to enhance infrastructure and living conditions on the glacier.

 

There has been notable progress in mobile and data connectivity, allowing improved communication in this challenging terrain.

“The introduction of VSAT (Very Small Aperture Terminal) technology has revolutionised communication on the glacier, providing troops with data and internet connectivity,” the Indian Army said in a press release.

The integration of heavy-lift helicopters and logistical drones has enhanced the supply of critical resources to personnel stationed at isolated posts, especially during severe winter conditions. This includes provisions such as clothing, mountaineering gear, and rations.

Recent efforts have focused on enhancing connectivity, resulting in notable advancements in the supply chain.

As a result, individuals deployed at forward posts in the Northern and Central Glaciers now enjoy access to fresh rations and vegetables bringing about a significant improvement in their living conditions.

“State-of-the-art medical infrastructure at Siachen, including telemedicine nodes established by ISRO, provides critical medical support not only to our troops but also to the local populace and tourists in the Nubra Valley. The medical facilities in Partapur and Base Camp boast some of the best medical and surgical specialists in the country, state-of-the-art HAPO chambers, and Oxygen Generation Plants besides life support systems,” the press release read.

Further, the Indian Army said in the document, “Today we recognise the sacrifices of our brave soldiers and the immortal spirit that has characterised the Indian Army's long deployment in Siachen.”

Launched in 1984 to secure the Siachen Glacier in Jammu and Kashmir, the military operation was unique in its nature as it was the first assault on the world's highest battlefield. As a result of this strategic maneuver, Indian troops successfully gained control over the entire expanse of the Siachen Glacier.
