PM Modi congratulates Indian chess player Divya Deshmukh on becoming a Grandmaster
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has congratulated Indian chess player Divya Deshmukh on not only winning the 2025 FIDE Women’s World Cup but also becoming a Grandmaster.
"Her accomplishment will motivate many people and contribute to chess becoming even more popular among the youth," Modi stated.
In a post on X, PM Modi said: "It’s been a phenomenal day for Indian Chess! Divya Deshmukh has not only won the 2025 FIDE Women’s World Cup but also become a Grandmaster. Congratulations to her. Her accomplishment will motivate many people and contribute to chess becoming even more popular among the youth."

Divya Deshmukh defeated senior master Koneru Humpy to clinch the FIDE Women’s World Cup title in Georgia on Monday.
Deshmukh, 19, became the country's first woman Grandmaster in the grand final clash via tie-break.
With the win, she is now eligible to become India’s fourth woman Grandmaster.
The final match was significant as two Indian nationals belonging to separate generations competed for the title.
