RG Kar rape and murder case accused transferred to CBI custody

Kolkata/IBNS: The Kolkata Police on Wednesday handed over arrested civic volunteer Sanjoy Roy, who is accused of raping and murdering a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, to the Central Bureau of Investigation.

Sanjoy has been handed over to the central probe agency's custody a day after the Calcutta High Court ordered a CBI probe into the incident, which sent shockwaves and triggered huge anger across the country.

The CBI will probe into the case, which has brought the Mamata Banerjee government under the scanner, under court monitoring.

Sanjoy was taken into CBI custody after his medical tests were conducted at the state-run SSKM Hospital.

The 31-year-old medical student was allegedly raped and murdered at the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, which is located in North Kolkata's Belgachia area, last week.

Though the civic volunteer has been arrested in connection with the case, protesting students, who went for ceasework across the state, suspect more people are involved in the case.

The Calcutta High Court on Tuesday came down heavily on the state government over the appointment of Dr. Sandip Ghosh to a government college within hours after he resigned as the principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

Slamming the state government and administration, the court wondered how Dr. Ghosh stepped down and was "rewarded with another responsibility?"

"...why do you protect (him)? Let him tell the truth... something is missing here," the court thundered as reported by NDTV.

The Calcutta High Court on Tuesday ordered controversial Dr. Sandip Ghosh to go on a long leave.

Dr. Ghosh, who faced the ire for alleged mismanagement and financial irregularities at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, resigned from his post on Monday.

"The Principal is the guardian of all doctors working there... if he doesn't show any empathy who will show? He should be at home not working anywhere...," Chief Justice TS Sivagnanam said as quoted by NDTV.

"... this Principal will not function... let him go on long leave. Otherwise we pass an order," the court said.

Alleging gross insensitivity in dealing with the heinous crime, the parents told the Calcutta High Court on Tuesday as quoted by NDTV, "We were told at 9.30 pm she was unwell... then (told) she committed suicide. The hospital did not allow me to see my daughter."
