An Indian-origin nurse is currently battling for her life after a man stabbed her with a pair of scissors at a ward in a Machester hospital on Saturday.

The nurse was identified as 57-year-old Achamma Cherian.

According to reports, Cherian, a mother of two, is undergoing treatment in a different hospital and her condition is said to be critical.

The accused in the case, who was identified by the police as 37-year-old Rumon Haque, has been arrested.

Greater Manchester Police wrote in a statement: "Rumon Haque (29/06/1987) from Royton in Oldham has been charged with attempted murder and possession of a bladed article."

He has been remanded to custody to appear at Manchester Magistrates Court on Tuesday 14 January 2024.

Detective Superintendent Matt Walker said: “Our thoughts are with the nurse as she continues to receive treatment in hospital for her injuries, and our priority remains supporting her, her family, and her colleagues at this difficult time."

“We continue to work closely with our NHS colleagues to support anyone who has been affected by this incident," he said.

My thoughts are with the nurse and her loved ones following this horrific attack at The Royal Oldham Hospital.

Nurses are the backbone of our NHS and should be able to care for patients without fear of violence.
