Bengaluru: A man from Karnataka’s Chitradurga lost Rs 1.5 crore in online betting, after which his wife committed suicide, media reports said.

The incident surfaced when the father of the 24-year-old deceased woman, approached the police, alleging that his daughter was under immense pressure from loan sharks who frequently demanded repayment, causing distress to the family, reported India Today.

The couple tied the knot in 2020, according to the complainant's statement to the police.

Only a year after their marriage, the woman learned that her husband, Darshan, was involved in cricket betting.

The persistent visits from creditors for recovery of their money caused frequent conflicts at their home, leading to mental anguish for Ranjitha, ultimately driving her to take her own life, according to the report.

Darshan Babu, an assistant engineer employed in the irrigation department, had borrowed a sum of Rs 84 lakh from over a dozen lenders, all of which he lost in cricket betting.

It was revealed that he had even provided blank cheques as collateral in these bets.

Law enforcement registered a complaint under Section 306 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Three lenders involved in the case were arrested by the police.
