'Will it be a big deal to wait for a few days?' Mamata Banerjee on Kolkata police chief's dismissal calls

"The Kolkata Police Commissioner has come to me several times last week and offered to resign. We have pujas coming up. Someone aware of law and order has to be there. If you can hold your patience for a few days, will it be a Mahabharat (big deal)?" Mamata Banerjee said.

Following the arrest of Sandip Ghose, the former Principal of RG Kar Medical College, where the 31-year-old junior doctor was brutally raped and murdered, the protester's next big demand has been the resignation of the police chief, who they feel was unable to deliver a transparent investigation and filed to stop vandalism in the medical facility on Aug 14 night.

The Opposition parties have also backed the protesters' demand for the police commissioner's resignation.

The role of the Kolkata Police in the investigation has been under scanner, especially after the victim's parents claimed that the cops forced them to cremate their daughter's mortal remains in a hurry even though they wanted to preserve it.

They even alleged that a police officer had offered them money to bury the incident.

There have been complaints about videography and questions have been raised over the fact that the postmortem was done at RG Kar hospital, which is the scene of crime and hence, creates a conflict of interest.

Then there is the issue of the 14-hour delay in filing the First Information Report in the case, which has been also flagged by the Supreme Court.

On Monday, the top court noted that a key document connected to the postmortem appeared to be missing.

Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud questioned about a certain challan that should be submitted showing what items of clothing and personal use were submitted for forensic examination. Without that challan, he said a postmortem cannot be carried out.

"See the third column on the top, the constable (who brought the body) is supposed to carry this (form). It has been struck off. So there is no reference to this challan when the dead body is sent for examination. You need to explain. If this document is missing, then something is amiss," said Justice JB Pardiwala, who was part of the three-judge bench.

Meanwhile, Mamata Banerjee has urged protesters to leave behind the agitation now and join celebrations as Durga Puja is just a month away.

Her remark has triggered a social media reaction of protests with many declaring to toe a different line.

Since the murder of the young doctor on Aug 9, Kolkata and West Bengal witnessed massive agitation with the effects spilling over to the rest of the country and beyond India with doctors and people from different walks of life taking out regular rallies to demand justice for the victim.

Following Banerjee's remark, several Facebook users were seen changing their display picture with a message that reads: "Utsobey firchi an (Won't return to the path of festival)."

Durga Puja, one of the biggest festivals in West Bengal, is just one month away and it is during this period when people in the city are usually seen shopping for the festival celebration.
