The incident has triggered shock and prompted police action, with the woman’s father arrested and a case registered under relevant sections.

Couple had married against family wishes

The woman, Shivani, had left home on May 18 with her neighbour Lalit Verma. The couple later married at a temple and officially registered their marriage.

Following the marriage, Shivani’s parents filed a case against Verma, prompting police to launch a search operation for the couple.

Acting on a tip-off last Friday, police traced the couple in Madhya Pradesh’s Satna district and brought them to Banda for questioning.

Couple reiterated consent before police

During questioning, the couple told police that they had married of their own free will and produced documents supporting their marriage.

Police later initiated procedures for Shivani’s medical examination and statement recording.

However, tensions escalated when both families arrived at the police station for counselling.

Attack inside police station

During the counselling session, Shivani’s parents allegedly continued to pressure her to return home. When she refused, the situation turned violent.

According to reports, Shivani’s mother held her from behind while her father allegedly pulled out a knife and attacked her in the presence of police personnel.

She suffered injuries to her abdomen, arm and palm and was rushed for medical treatment, but later succumbed to her injuries during treatment.

Police action and investigation

Banda Superintendent of Police Palash Bansal confirmed that a case has been registered and the father has been arrested.

Further investigation into the circumstances of the attack inside the police station is underway.
