Manipur observed Khongjom day to tributes to heroes fought against British

Imphal:Manipur on Tuesday observed “Khongjom Day” and paid rich tributes to the heroes of the then princely kingdom who valiantly fought against the mighty British and laid down their lives in the last war of independence “Anglo-Manipuri War” of 1891.
Manipur Governor Anusuiya Uikey and Chief Minister N. Biren Singh led the ministers, MLAs, government officials and people of the state in paying floral tribute to the brave heroes at Khongjom War Memorial located at Khongjom War Memorial Complex, Khebaching(Kheba Hill) in Khongjom, Thoubal District.
The observation began with the laying of floral wreaths led by the Manipur Governor and Chief Minister at the Martyrs Memorial located at the top of Kheba Hill. A contingent of 1st Manipur Rifles gave guard of honour, general salute, then sounded the last post and paid two-minutes silence. A gun salute was also given to the martyrs. Later, Governor Anusuiya and Chief Minister Biren also led others in paying floral tribute to the statue of Paona Brajabashi and followed by a gun salute. Tarpan was also offered at Khongjom River.
Other highlights of the day include Sankirtan by artistes of the Manipur State Kala Akademi, paying homage to the Sankirtan by the dignitaries and National Anthem by M.R. Band unit.
Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh while speaking to media persons said that the state has been going through tough times and everyone needs to support each other to wade through the crisis. “If we stand united, no outsiders can destroy the state’s integrity”, he said and appealed to all indigenous communities to help each other and stand united to bring peace in the state.
While appealing to all the people of the state to stop blaming, spreading hatred against one another, he said “we should try to bring peace in the state and live together as before”. Several organizations and Thang Ta Academy in valley areas also observed Khongjom day and paid rich tributes to the fallen heroes. Painting competitions and lecture, programmes were also organized as part of the observance.
