Mostofa Sarwar Farooki-directed movie 'Shonibar Bikel', which is loosely based on 2016 Dhaka attack, will release in USA, Canada next month
Dhaka: Acclaimed Bangladeshi director Mostofa Sarwar Farooki's much-talked-about film “Shonibar Bikel” or "Saturday Afternoon" will be released in Canada and the US on Mar 10.
The film would be released through India's Reliance Entertainment and the global distribution rights of the film have been acquired by Singapore's Continental Entertainment Pte Limited (CEPL), reports Dhaka Tribune.
The film was stuck on the Bangladesh Film Censor Board for four years.
However, it got the clearance for release recently.
Farooki wrote on Facebook: "Here we go. Saturday Afternoon trailer for USA and Canada release! The film releases on March 10 across USA and Canada!
A Reliance Entertainment and CEPL release!"
The trailer of the movie was recently released.
So far, no date has been set for the movie's release in Bangladesh.
The movie will premiere in the USA and Canada first.
CEPL CEO (Southeast Asia) Sreyashii Sengupta told Dhaka Tribune: "We are happy to release Farooqi's film ‘Saturday afternoon' after waiting for four years”.
Reliance Entertainment Head of Foreign Trade Affairs Dhruv Sinha, told the newspaper: “The movie has given us the opportunity to work with a filmmaker of an independent mindset. It has also opened the door to the world for Bangladeshi films. We assure you that Reliance Entertainment will bring such great work to world visitors in the future. ”
According to reports, the movie is loosely based on the July 2016 Dhaka attack.
The film has also received critical acclaim and praise from several film festivals, including the Russian Federation of Film Critics Jury Prize at the Moscow International Film Festival in April 2019, as well as the Kommersant Jury Prize at the Moscow International Film Festival in 2019.
