Three arrested in Mimi Chakraborty harassment row; actress says ‘this is just the beginning’
Kolkata/IBNS: Three people, including prime accused Tanay Shastri, were arrested on Thursday from Bongaon in West Bengal’s North 24 Parganas district in connection with the alleged harassment of Bengali actress Mimi Chakraborty during a public event.
Police arrested Shastri from his residence, along with two others from the same location, following a scuffle with locals who attempted to resist the arrests, officials said.
Reacting to the development, Chakraborty, who is currently busy promoting her latest release, said the arrests marked only the beginning of the legal process.
“This is just the beginning, not the end. An attempt has been made to create a false narrative that I was late for the show,” the actress said.
“Police are probing the incident and the court will say the last word. Truth will win. I am unafraid and cannot be cowed down,” she added.
A short while after he was arrested, Shastri complained of sickness and was admitted to a hospital.
"I won't spare Mimi," Shastri was heard murmuring lying on a stretcher at the hospital.
The controversy dates back to January 26, when Chakraborty alleged she was publicly humiliated during an event organised by Naya Gopal Gunj Yubak Sangha Club in Bongaon.
In a post on Instagram, the former Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP claimed she was abruptly asked to leave the stage without prior notice.
“There were many fans waiting to see me and take pictures. Leaving the stage in such a manner, accompanied by derogatory remarks over the microphone, was humiliating and publicly defaming,” she wrote, adding that she chose to leave quietly to maintain decorum.
Chakraborty later said she had approached legal authorities, stressing the need to act against such behaviour to ensure it is not repeated.
Meanwhile, a video circulating on social media shows Tanmoy Shastri, an official of the organising club, announcing that Chakraborty’s performance had ended as it was past midnight, leaving the actress visibly surprised.
Defending his actions, Shastri claimed police permission for the event was valid only until midnight and alleged the actress displayed an “attitude” despite being paid a substantial fee.
“This is a village. Police permission was till midnight. When I took the stage, it was past midnight, and I respectfully called off her performance. She cannot show attitude after being paid handsomely,” he said.
