BCCI to act tough on seniors if India fail to qualify for WTC final after whitewash against NZ: Reports
The whitewash against New Zealand that too in a Test series at home brought the Indian cricket team under the scanner with questions being raised on veterans alongside the tactics of the newly appointed head coach, Gautam Gambhir.
In a humiliating defeat, New Zealand sealed the series 3-0 on Sunday offering India their first Test series loss at home in 12 years.
India were defeated in a Test series at their backyard last in 2012 by England.
With New Zealand's 3-0 victory, India have also been whitewashed by any visiting team for the first time in 24 years.
The last time India faced such an embarrassment was in 2000 against South Africa.
Cut to 2024, the Indian cricket board (BCCI) is back at the drawing board with a scanner and is dealing with the setback strictly.
As per various reports quoting PTI, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is likely to take a drastic step against the seniors after the Australia tour, where they will play five Tests, if Rohit Sharma's side fail to reach the final of World Test Championship or WTC.
The Test teams for the Australia series are already announced and the players will leave for the tour on November 10 so there is no room or a thought process right now to disturb the combination.
But if India lose to Australia and miss out on a chance to qualify for the WTF final, the senior players like skipper Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja will have to make way for younger legs, reports claim.
If such a situation comes, the four senior players, who have struggled to find their touch in the New Zealand series, have already played their last Tests at home.
In the concluded series against New Zealand, neither the batters like Rohit, Virat could tackle the spinners like Mitchell Santner or Ajaz Patel nor Ashwin could make an impact.
India will play five Tests against Australia beginning on November 22.
