“This remarkable triumph reflects exceptional skill, determination and teamwork. The team showed outstanding grit throughout the tournament. This victory has filled every Indian heart with pride and joy,” he said.
“Well done, Team India!” the prime minister added.
India rewrote the record books by becoming the first host nation to win the T20 World Cup, defeating New Zealand national cricket team by 96 runs in the final of the iconic tournament in Ahmedabad on Sunday.
Riding on a sensational knock of 89 runs by Sanju Samson, India posted a massive total of 255 for five after New Zealand opted to bowl first upon winning the toss.
India’s bowling attack, led by Jasprit Bumrah, who claimed 4 wickets for 15 runs, dismissed New Zealand for 159, ending their impressive run in the tournament.
For New Zealand, captain Mitchell Santner scored 43 while Tim Seifert made 52, but their efforts were not enough against India’s dominant performance.
With this victory, India also became the first nation to win back-to-back T20 World Cup titles, having previously lifted the trophy in 2024 in the West Indies under the leadership of Rohit Sharma.
This marks India’s third T20 World Cup triumph in the history of the tournament.
