French striker Kylian Mbappe's hattrick went in vain as Argentina overpowered France in the penalty shootout 4-2 to clinch the trophy for the third time.
After leading the match 2-0 for about 80 minutes, Argentina's seemingly easy win-hope was dashed by Mbappe, who scored twice, once in a penalty kick and a stunning goal.
Later in the extra minutes, Argentina scored one more to gain back the lead over France but Mbappe hit the nets through a penalty again to equalise the scoreline.
But France looked too fragile in the penalty shootout which was won by Argentina 4-2 to clinch their third title and Messi's first.
