Siraj powers India to maintain dominance in Birmingham despite Smith-Brook's counter-attack
Birmingham/IBNS: Mohammed Siraj's six wickets helped India maintain their dominance against England despite a strong revival of the hosts on day three of second Test at Edgbaston in Birmingham on Friday.
Wicketkeeper-batter Jamie Smith (unbeaten 184) and Harry Brook (158) added marathon 303 runs for the sixth wicket, rescuing England from 84-5.
Akash Deep (4/88) provided the much-awaited breakthrough hitting the stumps of Brook, who slammed 17 fours and one six in his superb knock.
Though Smith, who hit 21 fours and four sixes, remained unbeaten, Mohammed Siraj (6/70) wiped out the tail-enders, bowling out England for 407.
"It's a little challenging to bowl considering the pitch and the English batting line-up, but as a bowler it won't be much tough if one is disciplined and executes the plans irrespective of conditions, wickets or batters," said Deep after the day's play.
Indian openers- Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul- started dealing mostly in boundaries in the second innings providing a quick start to the visitors, who were ahead of England by 244 runs at stumps on day three.
Though Jaiswal (28) was dismissed by Josh Tongue after a scene with England captain Ben Stokes over a review, Karun Nair survived the remaining balls along with KL Rahul, who is unbeaten at 28. India finished at 64-1 on day three.
On Thursday, India captain Shubman Gill hit his career-best 269 off 387 balls (30 fours and three sixes) to power the visitors to score a mammoth 587 in the first innings.
