In a significant development, a district court in Agartala on Monday rejected the bail plea of the prime accused in the brutal assault of an auto-rickshaw driver outside a BJP office in the city's Aralia area and directed police to arrest all the accused at the earliest.
The incident, which took place on the evening of June 22, 2026 triggered widespread outrage after videos of the assault went viral on social media and were widely circulated by local news channels.
According to the case details, auto-rickshaw driver Sujit Ghosh, a resident of Ghosh Para in Aralia under East Agartala police station, was returning home when he was allegedly stopped and assaulted in front of the BJP office of Ward No. 27 of the Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC).
The accused have been identified as Badal Ghosh, son of late Nepal Chandra Ghosh, his elder brother Ajit Ghosh, a retired executive engineer, and Arijit Ghosh, Ajit's son. The report alleged that the three men brutally attacked Sujit Ghosh following a minor dispute.
The viral videos of the incident showed the victim being assaulted in full public view outside the BJP office, drawing sharp criticism and widespread condemnation across the state.
Following the attack, local residents rescued Sujit Ghosh and rushed him to Indira Gandhi Memorial (IGM) Hospital. Owing to the seriousness of his injuries, he was referred to Govind Ballabh Pant (GBP) Hospital the following day for advanced treatment.
The victim's wife, Sharmista Saha (Ghosh), lodged a complaint with East Agartala Police Station, following which a case was registered under Sections 127(1), 109, 117(2), and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
According to the report, after the FIR was registered, some local ruling party leaders allegedly attempted to settle the matter through an arbitration meeting and offered compensation to the victim's family. However, Sujit Ghosh and his wife reportedly refused any compromise, insisting on legal action against those responsible for the assault.
The report further alleged that despite public outrage and assurances from Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha and senior police officials that justice would be ensured, police had failed to arrest any of the accused.
Subsequently, prime accused Badal Ghosh approached the district court seeking anticipatory bail. Senior advocate of High Court of Tripura, Subrata Sarkar appeared on behalf of the victim and opposed the bail application.
During the hearing before Additional District Judge Surya Deo Singh on Monday (July 27, 2026), Sarkar presented the viral videos of the assault before the court and argued that granting bail to persons accused of such a brutal attack in a public place would send a wrong message to society and undermine public confidence in the justice system.
After examining the video evidence and the victim's medical reports, the court rejected the bail plea and vacated the interim protection granted to accused Badal Ghosh. The court also directed the police to arrest all three accused at the earliest.
The case has drawn considerable public attention in Tripura due to the viral footage of the incident and the allegations surrounding the assault.
