AGMC & GBP Hospital completes another successful kidney transplant
The Agartala Government Medical College (AGC) and GBP Hospital again successfully completed another kidney transplantation surgery on Tuesday.
This time the patient was an alumnus doctor himself who trusted his college doctor and infrastructure for the treatment of his disease. Two consecutive successful kidney transplants were made possible at AGMC and GBP Hospital at the initiative of the Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha.
A ten-member specialized team from Shija Hospitals and Research Institute Pvt Ltd of Imphal, Manipur led by its Super Surgeon Dr. Soumorendra Pounam with Dr. Maharabam Mahili, Consultant Anesthetist Dr. Dinesh Thouonaujam and Dr. Dasaprakash, OT Nurses w Phijam Prem Kumar Singh and Shaugrakpam Rishop Singh and OT Technicians Thiam Ingobi Singh and Paonam Jodhachandra in association with a 7-member healthcare service provider team led by Bijit Lodh, Dr Mukut Debnath, Dr. Manas Gope and Tapan Debbarma (Anesthesiologist) from AGMC & GBP Hospital jointly performed the 2nd kidney transplantation surgery on Tuesday.
On November 11, 2024, the second kidney transplant was completed in the state. The first kidney transplant was done in the state on July 8, 2024. The Chief Minister lauded the grand achievement of the medicos and paramedics and congratulated the team and wished a speedy recovery of the patient. Medical Superintendent of the AGMC and GBP Hospital Dr. Sankar Chakraborty said in a press conference on Tuesday afternoon that the patient did not have to pay for the operation.
He also said that this successful kidney transplant was done on a patient named Dr. Shubodeep Acharya (28) who passed MBBS from Agartala Govt. Medical College & GBP Hospital and was working in an out-of-state hospital when he was detected to have severe kidney problems a few months ago. His serum creatinine level was reportedly very high. Being a doctor he knew its predictions.
The first successful kidney transplant surgery brought him back to Agartala in August last to consult the consultant Nephrologists and Euro-surgeon at the AGMC &GBP Hospital and complied with the suggestion of the specialist doctors and agreed to go for a kidney transplant. Luckily, one of his well-wishers came forward and donated one of his kidneys for him. The patient and the donor were stable and keeping fine, he added in the presence of other officials of the AGMC & Shija Hospital.
Dr Chakraborty said that the 10-member team of Super specialty doctors led by eminent Transplant Surgeon Dr. Soumorendra Pounam, from Shija Hospitals supported by a 7-member AGMC team jointly performed the 2nd kidney transplantation surgery on Tuesday. The surgery was successfully completed within 6 hours.
In addition, the state coordinator for the kidney transplant was Himadri Kar, the nursing officer, Gautam Biswas, Diptanu Sutradhar, Kishan Deb, and Sutapa Das as nurses. Prosenjit Mahajan and Piyali Chakraborty were floor nurses. Technicians Ratnamani Debbarma and Sunny Das. Senior Nursing Officer Tripti Chakraborty monitored this kidney transplant overall.
