AMC to develop master plan for ‘Greater Agartala’ by expansion with 49 GPs

The Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) in a comprehensive city development plan for “Greater Agartala”,  will take multiple initiatives to design to meet the city’s needs for the next 20 years.

Speaking with media persons, Mayor of Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC), Dipak Majumder said that the Corporation on Friday (July 11) in a council meeting had announced it would develop ‘Greater Agartala’, comprising 51 wards of the civic body along with 49 Gram Panchayats for extension of the city with next 20 years plan for improve civic amenities.

Majumder said the master plan for extending the city was almost ready. He added that the concept of ‘Greater Agartala’ was being formulated keeping in mind the requirements of the city for the next 20 years with advice of the Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha.

Majumder stated that the initial draft of the master plan has been completed and is currently under discussion within the AMC council. Once it receives the required departmental clearances, formal policy drafting will begin, then the state government will finalise the plan for the expansion of the city.

He claimed that there was no master plan for Agartala city in the past and has resulted in unplanned growth. The development of Agartala’s first master plan commenced in 2018, following the formation of the BJP-led state government, as no such plan existed previously.

Now, with the proposed master plan for ‘Greater Agartala’ will help for finalising routes for metro services, over bridge sites, roads, or suitable sites for industrial areas in and around the city in the future and all these aspects will be marked in the master plan, said Mayor.

The plan proposes the inclusion of 49 adjoining Gram Panchayats into the city’s jurisdiction, expanding the current 51 municipal wards and these areas will be integrated based on population growth, infrastructure feasibility, and development needs.

He added that the framework has been developed using Geographic Information System (GIS) technology, making it Agartala’s first digitally mapped master plan.

In addition to GIS mapping, the Urban Development Department is preparing a 3D model of the city to support spatial planning. The model is expected to assist in land-use decisions and infrastructure implementation.

As part of its broader objectives, AMC is also preparing new regulations to manage the city’s changing housing patterns, particularly the rise in high-rise apartments. These regulations will address zoning, safety, and land ownership to align with future development goals.
