After assault on Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT) general secretary Swapan Debbarma, the party on Wednesday claimed that he was attacked by Tipra Motha Party (TMP) workers and supporters in front of the Hejamara RD Block office of West Tripura district on Tuesday was politically motivated.
While, addressing a press conference at Agartala press club on Wednesday evening IPFT leaders said that Swapan Debbarma sustained a serious head injury after being allegedly beaten during the incident. He was later rushed to the GBP Hospital in Agartala, where he is currently undergoing treatment.
Condemning the incident, the IPFT leaders expressed strong resentment over the alleged attack.
The party alleged that the assault was politically motivated and aimed at weakening IPFT leaders and workers. IPFT general secretary Pradip Debbarma strongly protested against the incident, stating that such an attack on a political leader was a matter of serious concern.
He alleged that attempts were being made in a planned manner to harm the IPFT organization and questioned the security arrangements for party leaders and workers.
Pradip Debbarma further stated that the matter had already been discussed with the Election Department. He also urged the police administration to take necessary steps to prevent such incidents of political violence and ensure a peaceful atmosphere during the ongoing election process.
During the press conference, IPFT leaders also raised questions over the political alliance dynamics, stating that allegations of attacks between workers of alliance partners raise concerns about the purpose and effectiveness of such alliances. They pointed out that the incident has become significant in the backdrop of the political relationship between the BJP, Tipra Motha Party and IPFT.
The IPFT demanded an impartial investigation into the incident, strict legal action against those responsible, and measures to prevent recurrence of such incidents in the future. The party leadership reiterated that political differences cannot justify violence and that democratic space must be protected.
