A Special Judge (NDPS) court in Sonamura of Sepahijala district, has convicted a Bangladeshi national and sentenced him to multiple terms of rigorous imprisonment in connection with an NDPS case involving Phensedyl, suspected Ganja (Cannabis) and Bangladeshi currency smuggling.
According to a press release issued by the Tripura Police on Saturday, the convict, Md. Mujahid Miah (26) of Bangaon, Loaqon, under Nabiganj Police Station in Habiganj district of Bangladesh, was convicted by the Special Judge (NDPS), Sonamura, on September 19, 2026.
The court sentenced him to seven years of rigorous imprisonment (RI) and a fine of Rs. 25,000, with an additional three months of simple imprisonment in default of payment, for an offence punishable under Section 20(b)(ii)(B) of the Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985 Act.
He was also sentenced to 12 years of rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs. 1 lakh, with six months of simple imprisonment in default, under Section 21(C) of the NDPS Act. In addition, the court awarded two years of rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs. 5,000, with one month of simple imprisonment in default, under Section 3 of the IPP Act.
The case dates back to March 4, 2025, when BSF personnel of NC Nagar Border Outpost (BOP) of Sepahijala district apprehended Mujahid Miah while he was allegedly crossing the International Border illegally into India.
Sonamura Police subsequently reached the spot and conducted a search. Police recovered Rs. 28,500 in Bangladeshi currency, 25 bottles of Phensedyl and 12 kg of dry Ganja from his possession after completing the required legal formalities.
Following a detailed investigation, Sub-Inspector (SI) Jagabandhu Debnath of Sonamura police station, who is currently posted at Kalamchowra police station, submitted the charge sheet against the accused on August 29, 2025.
The trial court subsequently found the accused guilty and pronounced the sentence under the relevant provisions of the NDPS Act and IPP Act.
