The state government’s decision to provide a 100 percent subsidy on the additional increased portion of electricity bills, taking into consideration the financial difficulties faced by common consumers has been welcomed by ruling BJP.
Addressing a press conference at the BJP state headquarters at Krishnanagar in Agartala, MLA Bhagaban Das on Friday spoke in detail about various issues concerning electricity bills in the state. He said the government’s decision would significantly reduce the additional financial burden on electricity consumers.
The MLA further claimed that the BJP government was working sincerely to address problems related to electricity bills that, according to him, had affected consumers since the tenure of the previous CPI (M)-led government. He also claimed that the government had decided to waive the outstanding electricity bills accumulated over the past three months, which, he said, would benefit a large number of ordinary consumers.
During the press conference, Das presented a comparative picture of electricity tariffs under the previous CPI (M) government and the present BJP government. According to him, electricity prices were increased by nearly 60 per cent during the CPI (M) government, while the increase under the BJP government has been around 40 per cent.
Das also alleged that electricity tariffs were significantly increased during the tenure of former Power Minister Manik Dey. He said the present government was taking several consumer-friendly decisions concerning electricity services and billing, keeping the financial condition of ordinary people in mind.
The BJP MLA said electricity services were directly linked to the daily lives of people and therefore the government was giving special attention to ensuring that consumers did not face unnecessary difficulties over power bills.
He claimed that the measures announced by the government, if implemented, would provide considerable relief to electricity consumers across the state.
