A class VII student of Sabroom Vidyajyoti English Medium School under South Tripura district has allegedly been severely beaten by a teacher, leaving him injured. The student’s family has demanded legal action against the teacher.

The incident reportedly took place on August 11 last, when computer teacher Pratik Chakraborty entered the Class VII classroom for the second period. During a handwriting check, the teacher allegedly noticed a packet of ‘mimi’—a type of snack—under student Bikash Tripura’s notebook.

According to the family, when Bikash attempted to throw the packet out through the classroom window, the teacher called him back and allegedly lost his temper. The teacher is accused of repeatedly beating the 13-year-old student with several sticks.

After returning home, Bikash reportedly informed his family about the incident. His family alleged that he suffered severe pain throughout the night and was unable to sleep.

The following day, August 12, Bikash’s parents took him to the school and informed Principal Chandan Kumar Debnath about the incident. A meeting was subsequently held in the principal’s office involving the accused teacher, other teachers and the student’s parents.

According to the family, the school authorities assured them that they would monitor Bikash’s condition and maintain communication with the family.

However, as Bikash’s condition reportedly worsened, his family admitted him to the Kalachhara Primary Health Centre for treatment. The family alleged that the school authorities did not contact them even once to enquire about the student’s condition.

Seeking justice over the alleged assault, Bikash’s family lodged a complaint at Sabroom Police Station on August 19.

Following the news of the complaint, the school principal and three other teachers reportedly visited Bikash’s residence at Kalachhara and requested his parents to withdraw the case. The family, however, refused, questioning why the school authorities had allegedly failed to enquire about the child’s condition earlier.

The family has demanded a fair investigation into the alleged assault and appropriate legal action against the teacher.
