Concern over Damboor lake security, boat overturns, SDM calls meeting
A boat carrying tourists submerged in the middle of Dumboor Lake in Dhalai district on Sunday afternoon, raising concerns over safety protocols in the popular tourist destination of Tripura.
While, no injuries were reported as nearby boats promptly rescued all passengers.
According to SDM-in-charge of Gandacherra, Onkar Deb, the incident occurred due to the boat being overloaded with passengers. He said that initial reports suggest overloading as the cause of the accident. Fortunately, no one was injured, and everyone was safely rescued by nearby boats. However, the incident has raised serious concerns about safety measures for tourists visiting the scenic lake of Tripura.
SDM Onkar Deb noted that local authorities responsible for managing boating services had previously been reminded to ensure compliance with safety protocols, including providing life jackets to all passengers. Despite these reminders, it appears that safety measures were not strictly followed, which could have led to a major tragedy if rescue boats were not in the vicinity.
The SDM called a meeting with the local body on Monday to address the negligence and ensure strict adherence to safety protocols in the future.
Dumboor Lake, renowned for its scenic beauty and the famous Narikel Kunja Island, often attracts large crowds, especially during weekends and holidays. Sunday's incident serves as a wake-up call for authorities to prioritize the safety of tourists in such high-traffic areas.
As the New Year approaches and visitor numbers continue to rise, stricter safety measures and vigilant enforcement are crucial to ensure the well-being of all tourists.
