As part of the nationwide protest programme launched by the All India Congress Committee (AICC), the Unakoti District Congress on Monday organized a massive protest rally and burnt the effigies of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar and Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Kailashahar, alleging attempts to undermine the electoral process and deprive millions of citizens of their voting rights.
The protest rally began from the District Congress Bhavan in Kailashahar in the evening and passed through the town's main roads before culminating at Kargil Corner. Congress leaders and workers raised slogans against the Central Government and the Election Commission before burning the effigies of the Chief Election Commissioner and the Prime Minister.
The demonstration was attended by senior Tripura Congress leader, Leader of the Congress Legislative Party and Kailashahar MLA Birajit Sinha, Unakoti District Congress president Md. Badruzzaman, along with several district and block-level party leaders and workers.
Addressing the gathering, Md. Badruzzaman said the protest was organized under the leadership of Birajit Sinha to demand the arrest of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar and to protest the alleged deletion of nearly 13 crore names from the country's electoral rolls.
"We have burnt the effigies of Gyanesh Kumar and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Our demand is that the names of all voters who have been removed from the electoral rolls must be restored immediately," he said.
Speaking on the occasion, Birajit Sinha strongly criticized the Central Government, alleging that the Election Commission was being used for partisan interests to weaken the democratic foundations of the country. He asserted that the Congress would continue its agitation to safeguard the voting rights of citizens.
The protest created considerable political activity across Kailashahar, with Congress leaders declaring that the agitation would be intensified until their demands are met.
