Congress MLA Sudip Roy Barman urges CM to follow UGC’s age-limit norms for Assistant Professor recruitment

Senior Congress leader and party MLA Sudip Roy Barman in a letter to the Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha requested him to implement University Grants Commission (UGC) guidelines over age limits in the recruitment of Assistant Professors in General and Professional Degree Colleges in Tripura.
Roy Barman in his letter to the Chief Minister on Tuesday (June 23) highlighted that the current age limit for the posts, as advertised by the Tripura Public Service Commission (TPSC), stands at 40 years. He specifically referred to Advertisement No. 05/2025 dated January 30, 2025, and Advertisement No. 15/2025 dated May 7, 2025, as examples.
Roy Barman mentioned that this restriction directly contradicts UGC norms, under which there is no upper age limit for the recruitment of Assistant Professors. He said that many qualified candidates holding NET, SET or PhD degrees, as well as experienced guest faculty members of Tripura, are being deprived due to this arbitrary age limit norm by TPSC.
He also emphasized that several other Indian states already follow the UGC guidelines and allow age-relaxed recruitment processes and claimed that Tripura Central University, which operates under the central government, does not impose such an age restriction for recruitment of Assistant Professors.
Roy Barman urged the Chief Minister to ensure that Tripura’s recruitment rules align with national academic standards to implement the age limit criteria as per UGC guidelines for the recruitment of Assistant Professors through TPSC.
