CPI (M) to organize statewide agitation unless arrest of all accused for Joynagar attack
The opposition CPI (M) on Sunday threatened to organize statewide agitations unless police will not arrest all accused persons responsible for the attack on a party meeting at Joynagar area of Agartala, in which 12 party leaders and workers sustained injuries.
On Sunday, CPI(M) state secretary and leader of opposition (LoP) Jitendra Chaudhury speaking with media persons alleged that Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha totally failed to protest the political rights of opposition parties and security of state’s people. “Under the BJP rule law and order has collapsed and all criminals and anti-social elements took shelter in the saffron party, and police became puppets in the hands of BJP goons,” he alleged.
He said that a group of BJP workers under the leadership of Ramnagar Mandal president Amitabha Bhattacharjee resorted to an attack with arms as per their pre-planned in a public meeting at bordering Joynagar area of the city in presence of a large contingent of police personnel, where they became silent spectators when miscreants’ indiscriminately attacked on CPI (M) supporters.
Chaudhury reacting over the allegation of ‘inner-party clash’ made by local BJP MLA and Mayor of Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) Dipak Majumder, claimed that if the attack was inner-party clash then hwy Mandal president of Ramnagar assembly constituency along with his associates were seen at the incident spot and were also attacked CPI(M) workers and leaders.
Miscreants in a group of 15 to 20 people all of sudden attacked the leaders and party workers from the back side breaching the security barricade and severally injured many leaders including CPI(M) West Tripura district committee secretary, Ratan Das and senior party leader Subhasish Ganguli, said Chaudhury and added that its very shameful police forces remained silent spectators despite miscreants attacked in a peaceful meeting with arms and hurled crude bombs.
At Least 12 CPI(M) leaders and workers suffered critical injuries and among the injured persons five were admitted to GB Hospital and rest were released after primary treatment.
After the incident , tension gripped the entire area and large numbers of security forces were deployed and large number of CPI (M) workers through a rally gheraoed the West Agartala police station on Saturday evening led by party leaders Pabitra Kar, Sankar Prasad Datta and Amal Chakraborty demanding immediate arrest of all miscreants responsible for the attack in a peaceful meeting. They also met the OC of police station, Paritosh Das and submitted a memorandum demanding arrest of all miscreants.
Police sources said that after the clash, a large number of security forces were deployed to defuse the tension.
Police added that based on the complaint lodged by CPI(M), an investigation has been launched against the accused persons.
Meanwhile, CPI(M) on Sunday organized protest rallies in many parts of the state including in Dharmanagar, Panisagar and other subdivisional towns. They strongly condemned the incident and demanded immediate arrest of all accused persons.
