Though, the overall flood situation in Tripura further improved on Sunday with the water receding in many places even as 1.17 lakh people are still sheltered in 525 relief camps in various districts, the Education department has also suffered maximum and during floods from August 19 to 24, the properties of Rs. 11 crore has been destroyed except of Amarpur subdivision and South Tripura district has been badly affected in the devastating flood.

Addressing a press conference at Civil Secretariat  on Sunday afternoon, the Director of School Education department, N C Sharma said that as per primary estimation altogether 209 schools across the state.

He said that among the affected schools, 10 in West Tripura, 38 in Sepahijala, 43 schools in Gomati, 62 in South Tripura, 12 in Khowai, 22 in Dhalai, 18 in Unakoti and 4 more schools in North Tripura district. He said that two more schools in Satchand and Bharat Chandra Nagar blocks have also been severely destroyed in landslides.

The government has set up flood relief camps in 239 schools across the state and about 12,000 books have also been destroyed in the flood.

Sharma said that till today many schools have been occupied for relief camps and the decision of reopening of all schools will be taken by the state government.

He added that schools under the flood affected areas will be reopened after a proper cleaning process.

During the press meet, the director of SCERT, L Darlong said that the department has sufficient number of books and all flood affected students, who lost their books will get free books from the department.

The director of Higher Education department, Animesh Debbarma  said that all the higher education institutions , which remained closed from August 22 and will reopen  after the state government’s decision. He said that few colleges of the state have also suffered losses during the flood and two colleges in Dharmanagar and Kailashahar have been occupied for relief camps.
