Earthquake of magnitude 4.4 jolts North Tripura's Dharmanagar town
A moderate intensity earthquake magnitude of 4.4 on the Richter scale struck Dharmanagar town of North Tripura district on Saturday afternoon , the National Center for Seismology (NCS) informed.
According to the NCS, the earthquake was recorded at a depth of 43 km and its epicenter was at Cachar district of Assam and the earthquake occurred at around 3:48 pm.
"Earthquake of Magnitude: 4.4, Occurred on 09-09-2023, 15:48:31 IST, Lat: 24.76 and Long: 92.74, Depth: 43 Km, Location: 72 km NE of Dharmanagar, Tripura," the National Center for Seismology (NCS) informed.
The NCS said that the moderate intensity tremor was felt in the Dharmanagar town and adjoining areas of Cachar creating some panic among the people. There was no immediate report of any casualty or damage to property.
Successive earthquakes in the mountainous northeastern states, especially in Assam, Mizoram and Manipur and Tripura have kept the authorities worried, forcing them to build quake-protective structures. Seismologists consider the Northeastern region as the sixth most earthquake-prone belt in the world.
