Tripura Police are conducting a detailed investigation into the alleged abduction and rape of a married college student while she was returning home from MBB College in Agartala, with investigators examining CCTV footage, mobile phone locations and other scientific evidence, Inspector General of Police (Law and Order) Ipper Manchak said on Thursday.
Speaking to media persons, the IGP said a specific case has been registered at the East Agartala Women police station and that he is personally supervising the investigation.
The police are examining CCTV footage from different locations and analyzing the mobile phone locations of suspected persons as well as that of the alleged survivor on the day of the incident, he said.
The IGP said no arrests have been made so far and that police are verifying the survivor's statements against available scientific and technical evidence. He added that investigators would ascertain the actual sequence of events and, if any crime is established, take action against those involved.
Manchak declined to divulge further details, citing the ongoing investigation, and expressed confidence that the case would be solved soon.
According to the complaint lodged by the survivor and her husband, the woman was allegedly abducted by unidentified persons in a vehicle while she was returning home on Monday. The assailants allegedly demanded a ransom of Rs 10 lakh from her husband before sexually assaulting her and abandoning her several kilometres away from the alleged place of abduction.
However, police have not officially confirmed the alleged ransom demand or other details mentioned in the complaint and said these claims are being verified as part of the investigation.
The incident has triggered widespread concern over women's safety in the state and drawn criticism from opposition parties.
