Jiribam sets an example in returning to peace
Imphal: The recent unrest in Jiribam and remarkable recovery to normalcy amidst Manipur’s broader unrest has garnered widespread appreciation. This stability, maintained in part by the proactive and strategic efforts of the Assam Rifles, continues to be a focal point in understanding how peace can be achieved in volatile regions. As recent events unfold, it becomes evident that Jiribam may indeed be the turning point in the Manipur crisis.
The sudden and effective activation of Assam Rifles in Jiribam has taken many by surprise. Their ingenuity in operations, combined with a deep understanding of the local socio-political landscape, has thwarted attempts by various parties to escalate tensions and disrupt the peace. Their presence and strategic interventions have been instrumental in de-escalating the situation, preventing it from spiralling out of control.
Since June 6, 2024, the security forces have demonstrated a proactive stance, ensuring no opportunity for tensions to rise unchecked. This approach has borne fruit, as evidenced by the return of almost fifty internally displaced persons (IDPs) to their homes. Additionally, residents some IDP camps have started visiting their agricultural lands during the day, signalling a return to normalcy and confidence in the security environment.
Despite numerous attempts on social media to portray the situation as critical and out of hand, the reality on the ground tells a different story. The situation in Jiribam is fast improving, thanks to the comprehensive and well-coordinated efforts of the state and central machinery. The security forces operations have left no space for armed miscreants to operate, effectively neutralizing threats and restoring peace.
Community engagement has also played a significant role in this positive turn of events.
Security forces have initiated community level dialogues which are crucial for rebuilding trust and fostering a peaceful coexistence among different groups. The problem is being addressed at multiple levels, with efforts to open communication channels and bring communities back to the negotiating table.
In addition to these community efforts, the Assam Rifles continue to unsettle armed miscreants attempting to infiltrate Jiribam. Their omnipresence and relentless pursuit of security have ensured that miscreants find no foothold in the region. This comprehensive strategy has effectively contained the situation, preventing it from escalating further.
The impact of these proactive measures is further underscored by significant drug seizures across the North East, totalling approximately Rs 270 crore between June 6 and June 21. These seizures have struck the financial underpinnings of insurgent groups, weakening their operational capabilities.
The firm stance of national leadership has also contributed to these developments. RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat's call for decisive action on June 10, followed by a high-level meeting convened by Home Minister Amit Shah on June 17, highlights the government's commitment to resolving the Manipur crisis. These actions have provided a strategic framework that supports the on-ground efforts of the Assam Rifles and other security forces.
While challenges remain, the situation in Jiribam presents a beacon of hope. The combined efforts of the Assam Rifles, national leadership, and local communities are paving the way for lasting peace. Jiribam stands as a testament to resilience, strategic foresight, and the power of proactive measures in conflict resolution. The events of June 6, 2024, are likely to be remembered as the beginning of the end for prolonged conflict in the region, setting a precedent for peacebuilding efforts across Manipur and beyond.
