The BJP and its NDA ally Tipra Motha have decided to jointly contest the upcoming elections to the Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC), municipal councils and Nagar Panchayats across Tripura.
This was announced by Agriculture and Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath after a meeting between representatives of the BJP and Tipra Motha on Sunday in Agartala. He said discussions on seat-sharing arrangements and the proposals put forward by Tipra Motha would be held with the party leadership, and a final decision would be communicated by Monday night.
Describing Sunday’s meeting as cordial and fruitful, Nath said both parties had discussed the prospects of fighting the civic elections together as alliance partners.
Meanwhile, Tipra Motha MLA Ranjit Debbarma also confirmed the decision to contest the upcoming municipal elections jointly with the BJP as part of the NDA alliance.
Speaking after the meeting, Debbarma said Tipra Motha had demanded a respectable number of seats to contest in the civic polls. He added that the final decision on seat-sharing would be taken after the BJP’s meeting on Monday.
With the civic elections approaching, the seat-sharing negotiations between the two alliance partners have assumed significance. The final arrangement is expected to determine the number of seats each party will contest across the state’s municipal bodies.
