Overall crime rate reduced over 20% in past 5 years, CM
Significant improvement has been registered in the overall law and order situation across the state and over the past four and half years, the crime rate has also drastically come down, said Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha.
After attending a high level meeting of with district police officers including OCs, SDPOs in presence of DGP and other top officials of the police department here at Pragna Bhavan on Sunday, Chief Minister reviewing the total law and order situation of the state said that since 2018, there has been an over 20% reduction in overall cases registered in the state.
Soon after the review meeting, Chief Minister speaking with media persons said that due to unbiased and prompt actions, the crime has shown a consistent decline over the last 5 years and as per the National Crime Record Bureau (NCRB)-2021 date, Tripura has the 5th lowest crime figures among all states of the country.
Dr Saha said that as per the data by Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), Tripura has recorded the second highest narcotic seizure in the entire Northeast region. In Tripura at present there are 83 police stations including 8 women police stations and there are also 5 Railway police stations, 35 police outposts and 300 police camps across the state, said Dr Saha and added that police authorities present in the meeting highlighted their problems on maintaining law and order.
The Chief Minister assured that soon the government will resolve the problem suffered by police to ensure better services to common people of the state.
He said that opposition parties are often alleged that the law-and-order situation has deteriorated in the state, which is totally false and fabricated and in reality, the law-and-order situation has improved in the last five years.
He said that the Emergency Response Support System (ERSS) toll-free number-112 has been a major success and highway patrolling has been intensified with the launching of 4 highway patrol vehicles and the government is planning to introduce four more vehicles.
"The effective police action by our government has ensured that violent and unlawful activity is dealt with firmly,", said Dr Saha and added that at present there is no significant insurgent activities inside the state and some remnants of insurgency are left and mostly operate from neighbouring Bangladesh. However, the state police and central forces are on it to bring it to an end.
Progressing the motto of the state government, drug free Tripura, from 2018 to till 2022, a total of 1800 drug related cases have been registered and over 2800 persons have also been arrested by the police, said Dr Saha.
Over 1.92 lakh kilograms of dry cannabis, 8 lakh bottles of codeine-based cough syrup, 45.63 lakh Yaba tablets and 18 kgs of Heroine were seized by the police since 2018, said Chief Minister and added that Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been set up in September, 2022 for a detailed and focused investigation of such case with regular coordination between NCB and state police.
Dr Saha also said that crime against women is being dealt with seriously and there is an overall decrease of over 15 % in crime against women and the government has also introduced a 24-hours women help desk to provide a woman friendly environment.
While at the beginning part of the review meeting, DGP Amitabh Ranjan gave a detailed presentation over the performances of state police and their readiness before the ensuing assembly elections.
