A series of firearm recoveries in Tripura's border subdivision of Sonamura under Sepahijala district has raised serious concerns over the growing nexus between cross-border smuggling, drug trafficking and the easy availability of illegal weapons among youths, prompting fears over public safety ahead of the upcoming Urban Local Bodies (ULB) elections.

Residents and local sources allege that several villages along the India-Bangladesh border have increasingly become vulnerable to organize criminal activities, with many young people reportedly being drawn into drug trafficking and cross-border smuggling instead of pursuing education and employment. Law enforcement agencies are also facing mounting scrutiny as repeated incidents involving illegal firearms have heightened concerns over law and order in the region.

The latest incident occurred on Tuesday when Jatrapur police station arrested a 26-year-old man, identified as Lokman Hossain, from Birampur village under Jatrapur police station in Kathalia block, after he allegedly arrived at his in-laws' house carrying a pistol.

According to police, Lokman had an altercation with his wife in the morning, following which she left for her parental home at Baranarayan without informing him. Enraged, the accused allegedly reached the house around 10 am armed with a pistol. Shocked by his sudden arrival, family members attempted to overpower him. He reportedly fled towards the road but was chased and surrounded by local residents, who managed to snatch the weapon from him before restraining him on the verandah of the house. He was later handed over to Jatrapur police.

Officer-in-Charge (OC)  Parthanath Bhowmik said police arrested the accused and seized one pistol, five rounds of live ammunition and a magazine from his possession. Preliminary investigation suggests that the firearm is of American make, although such weapons are often referred to locally as "Chinese pistols." Based on a complaint lodged by the accused's mother-in-law, police have registered a case under relevant legal provisions and launched an investigation. The accused will be produced before the Sonamura court on Wednesday with a prayer for police remand, the officer added.

The arrest comes just days after Kalamchowra police station apprehended a 21-year-old youth, Hriday Miah of Boxanagar, in connection with two robbery cases allegedly committed during the Durga Puja festivities. Police had recovered a pistol and the luxury vehicle allegedly used in the crimes. Investigators suspect the accused was also involved in narcotics and cross-border smuggling activities.

Intelligence sources believe that illegal firearms are increasingly finding their way into the hands of youths involved in drug trafficking and smuggling through routes stretching from Myanmar via Bangladesh into Tripura. According to the sources, pistols are reportedly being procured for as little as Rs 20,000 to Rs 40,000, making them easily accessible to criminal elements.

Several firearm seizures across Sonamura subdivision in recent months have reinforced concerns over the growing circulation of illegal weapons in the border belt. The trend has triggered fear among local residents and is expected to pose a major challenge for the administration in maintaining law and order ahead of the forthcoming municipal and civic body elections.
